Law society sets election roadmap for JSC representatives

Two candidates who will obtain the highest number of votes will replace Ruth Sebatindira and Norah Matovu, who completed their term in December last year.

The elections had been halted by the High Court following an application by Nabasa (Pictured), who had been disqualified from the race by the ULS election committee on grounds that she lacked the 15 years in legal practice as required under Article 147 of the constitution.

KAMPALA - The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has issued a roadmap for the long-awaited election of its representatives to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

This follows a unanimous decision by the ULS members during an extraordinary general meeting hosted at Imperial Royale hotel in Kampala on September 17 this year.

The roadmap indicates that campaigns will commence on October 1, while the elections will take place on October 18 this year at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe. Fifteen candidates are vying for the two positions.

These include Elison Karuhanga, Dr Christopher Mbazira, Paul Mukiibi, Mariam Nabulime Mbabali, Frank Kanduho and Dr Conrad Anthony Kakooza.

Others are Dr Patricia Atim, Alex Rezida, Diana Nabuuso Katimbo, Shamim Amolo, Denis Kusaasira, Fred Milton Ocen, Richard Omongole, Edison Ruyondo and Pheona Wall Nabasa, a former ULS president.

The elections had been halted by the High Court following an application by Nabasa, who had been disqualified from the race by the ULS election committee on grounds that she lacked the 15 years in legal practice as required under Article 147 of the constitution.

However, during the extraordinary general meeting earlier this month, the ULS members resolved to have her added to the list of contenders so that the elections can be conducted.

Two candidates who will obtain the highest number of votes will replace Ruth Sebatindira and Norah Matovu, who completed their term in December last year.
