Uganda Law Society (ULS) president Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde has had his term extended by six months to facilitate preparations for the upcoming election.
His term in office was set to expire on September 27, 2025. The term of the ULS governing council members has also been extended by six months.
The decision was made on September 17, 2025, during an extraordinary general meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Judicial Service Commission representatives
The lawyers also unanimously resolved to elect their representatives to the Judicial Service Commission within a period of one month.
Munabi, Turyamusiima censured
The ULS has also censured advocates Philip Munabi and Geoffrey Turyamusiima during the meeting.
The two lawyers were accused of attempting to undermine ULS democratic processes by spearheading a failed bid to impeach ULS President Ssemakadde last year.
In the vote on censure, 462 members supported the motion, 83 opposed, while 35 did not vote.
Members further resolved to remove the pair from the ULS Governing Council. On this question, 394 lawyers supported the move against 100, while 35 did not vote.
A proposal to refer the two advocates to the Law Council for both disciplinary and criminal action was, however, rejected.
The members argued that such a move would tantamount to double jeopardy since the duo had already faced censure within the society.
The decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing internal wrangles at ULS, reflecting sharp divisions over leadership and governance within the professional body.
The meeting started with counsel Arnold Mugisha supporting the move to extend Ssemakadde's term for another year while lawyers Tom Mbalinda and Eron Kiiza rejected the move, insisting that the annual general meeting should be conducted for proper elections.
