LAMWO - Lamwo district leaders want to cancel the land title for Uganda Livestock Industry Limited for part of Aswa Ranch that is within the district.

The leaders have now constituted a 10-member committee, headed by Eng. Hillary Onek, the Member of Parliament for Palabek County in Lamwo district, to champion the move.

They also resolved to rather work with the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB), which is currently occupying Aswa ranch, to help enhance livestock farming among the people in the district.

Their resolutions come after the findings by Bardege-Layibi Division Member of Parliament Martin Ojara Mapenduzi released on Saturday, August 3, 2024, in Lamwo district, in the state of Aswa Ranch.

Ojara found out that part of the approximately 40,000 acres which were to be given to the Uganda Livestock Industry Ltd by Acholi district land board in 1967, was left unused since it was infested with tsetse flies.

According to him, the Uganda Livestock Industry Limited only compensated 38 families who were living in the central and southern part of Pager River which is now in Pader District in 1967 and 1968, for a piece of land measuring about 63,000 acres, before it was fenced off.

At the moment, the firm is claiming 40,000 acres of land in Lamwo district stretching from Palabek Abera, Palabek Gem and Palabek Ogili sub-counties.

Onek said the land title should be cancelled because the land was not legally acquired.

However, according to Harriet Acan, the coordinator Uganda livestock industry, they have documents which show that they have land in Lamwo and that they are ready to negotiate with the affected locals.
