A 30-year-old fisherman has died in a gruesome crocodile attack while illegally fishing along the shores of Lake Edward in Katwe-Kabatoro Town Council, Kasese district.

The victim, identified as Andres Mumbere, a resident of Rwenjubu cell in Rwenjubu ward, was attacked on April 18, 2025, at around midday after unknowingly entering a known breeding zone for crocodiles and hippos, according to police.

Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, said the deceased had gone fishing alone using hooks—an illegal method in protected breeding zones.

“While conducting illegal fishing, a huge crocodile attacked Mumbere, dragged him into the water, and disappeared with him beneath the surface,” Tumushime said.

“The Police Marine Unit responded swiftly and recovered body parts around 2:00pm, but sadly, his limbs had already been chewed.”

Tumushime warned local fishermen to avoid dangerous and restricted areas, especially during the crocodile and hippo breeding season, which poses heightened risks to humans.

“This tragic incident serves as a cautionary tale. We urge the fishing community to respect conservation guidelines and avoid venturing into known breeding areas,” he said.

“Our Marine Unit will continue regular patrols on the lake, and arrests will be made for those who engage in illegal fishing activities.”

Authorities have intensified surveillance on the lake to curb illegal practices and safeguard both human life and aquatic wildlife.
