The High Court in Masaka has granted bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi's bodyguards after their initial attempts over the past 13 months failed.

The bodyguards are; Edward Ssebuufu alias Eddie Mutwe, Achillies Kivumbi, Gadaffi Mugumya and Grace Wakabi.

The four appeared before Masaka resident Judge Victoria Nakintu today (October 7), who granted each of them bail at sh5m cash.

The excited Ssebuufu and Kivumbi appeared on Zoom from Luzira Prison.

The four bodyguards are facing charges of assault and aggravated robbery.

The prosecution alleges that the accused, while at the last funeral rites of the late Democratic Party secretary-general Mathias Nsubuga in Manja village, Lwengo district, assaulted John Mukalazi, Margret Kayondo and Zainab Namusazi before robbing their property.

However, the Court heard that the bail granted to Ssebuufu and Kivumbi was affected by their pending cases related to participating in an illegal drilling exercise at the NUP head offices, which is being heard at Kanyanya Magistrate's court in Kampala.

Unlike Mugumya and Wakabi, Ssebuufu and Kivumbi will have to gain their freedom after securing bail from the Kanyanya court.

The accused person's lawyer, Samuel Muyizzi, said they were still sorting out the cash bail term of Sh5m and passport presentation to court before Mugumya, and Wakabi can also gain freedom.
