Coach Ayub Khalifah Kiyingi remains hopeful of guiding Kawempe Muslim Secondary School to the semifinals of the CAF African Schools Football Championship despite failing to win their opening group game against South Africa.

"It is frustrating not to win our opening game as we had anticipated but a draw is not a bad result either," he said.

"There are two more games to play and I am hopeful that we will win them and qualify for the semifinals," Kiyingi added.

Kawempe drew 1-1 with South Africa in the opening match of Group B on Tuesday, May 21, at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

Kiyingi's Kawempe side returns to action today with two games, first against Togo and later in the day against The Gambia.

Kawempe is representing Uganda in the girls' category while St Mary's Kitende is representing in the boys’ category.

Kitende are in Group A which has only three teams and will play both of their games today against Tanzania and Senegal.

The CAF African Schools Football Championships is a tournament for U-15 boys and girls from schools that won their respective zonal qualifiers.

Uganda's Kawempe and Kitende won the CECAFA zonal qualifiers against schools from Tanzania in the girls’ and boys’ categories respectively to book their tickets to the final tournament.

This is the second edition of the tournament but marks the first time Uganda has sent representatives.
