The lawyer of the embattled Karamoja affairs minister Mary Goretti Kitutu has told Inspector General of Government (IGG) Beti Kamya that she is unwell.

The condition, according to the lawyer, has made it impossible for her to physically honour the summons issued by Kamya.

Jude Byamukama explained about the minister's predicament to journalists, who asked why she did not turn up.

IGG spokesperson Ali Munira later also confirmed that indeed that is the explanation the lawyer gave them.

She, however, said the minister will be summoned on a date that will be communicated to her soon.

The minister was expected to appear before the IGG today, January 11, 2024, to avail to the anti-corruption agency information about the ongoing inquiry in the supplementary funds released to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to support peace building activities in Karamoja sub-region in the 2021/2022 financial year.

However, she (Kitutu) instead sent her lawyer, Byamukama, who arrived at the IGG's office, along Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala at about 10:40am. Byamukama was accompanied by lawyer Rogers Katunguka.

The December 6, 2023, summons was received by Kitutu last week (January 4) and comes on the backdrop of another directive to the Police to search Kitutu's residence in Bbunga, Kampala.

In April last year, Kitutu was arrested, arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court and charged with loss of public property in connection in connection to diversion of iron sheets that were meant to be distributed to the vulnerable in the Karamoja sub-region.

She was charged alongside her brother, Michael Naboya Kitutu and personal assistant Joshua Abaho. Naboya is accused of receiving stolen property, while Abaho is battling charges of corruption.
