Kisubi Brothers seek sh6b to put up house for ageing confreres
The house will be built at their provincial headquarters at Mount St. Teresa, Kisubi, on Entebbe Road, in Wakiso district. The proposed house has also been earmarked as the monument for the centenary of the existence of the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Uganda.

The Brothers of Christian Instruction, locally referred to as the Brothers of Kisubi, have unveiled a plan to build a specialised house for their elderly and sickly members.
The house will be built at their provincial headquarters at Mount St. Teresa, Kisubi, on Entebbe Road, in Wakiso district. The proposed house has also been earmarked as the monument for the centenary of the existence of the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Uganda.
The Brothers declared the project and also launched its fundraising drive at Mount St Teresa Kisubi on Monday, July 6, 2026. Bro. Rogers Kazibwe is the Brothers’ General Treasurer.

“We the Brothers of Christian Instruction have been active in this country, offering holistic education to children and young people, for 100 years. Today we have a number of elderly and infirm Brothers who need specialised care at a specialised facility. We need sh6bn to put up the proposed facility. It will have 34 rooms, a recreational room, a chapel, and an intensive care unit, among other things. We believe that our ageing and sickly confreres will have due comfort and care once the facility is put up. The costs of treating them will also be reduced enormously,” Kazibwe said.
Bro. Kazibwe said the foundation stone of the proposed house had already been laid and people of goodwill had already contributed building materials such as bricks, iron bars, cement and cash amounting to sh400m.
He paid tribute to some alumni of the Brothers, such as Dr Andrew Wise Ssentale, and Lawrence Ssebulime, who he said had offered to help them reach out to institutions, corporate organisations and individual people of goodwill and encourage them to support the proposed centennial monument fundraising drive with cash donations.
Brothers Centenary Fete Getting Underway
Meanwhile, the preparations for the grand celebration of the centenary of arrival of the pioneer Brothers of Christian Instruction are underway. The grand function will take place at Mount St. Teresa Kisubi (the Brothers’ headquarters) on September 5 (2026).
Bro. John Ssenkabirwa is the Chairman of the event’s central organising committee.

“We thank God for our presence and educational ministry in Uganda. We glorify the Lord with even greater joy for all the things we have been able to accomplish. Certainly, we have taught so many people. Everywhere you go, you will find people who went through our schools. September 5 will provide us with an opportunity to celebrate together with our alumni, parents, friends, benefactors and well-wishers, all the things that the Lord has enabled us to do during the 100 years of our presence in Uganda. But we shall also thank Him for his providence and deliverance. The theme of our celebration is: We remember, we celebrate, we believe.”
About the Brothers of Christian Instruction
The Brothers of Christian Instruction (alias Brothers of Kisubi) are a humble but very influential Catholic religious institute, whose speciality is Christian education of children and young people. They are thus the vanguards/pioneers of holistic education in Uganda.
The institute was founded by two French priests, Jean Marie de la Mennais and Gabriel Deshayes, in France, in 1819. The first Brothers of Christian Instruction came to Uganda in 1926 on the invitation of the White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa). According to Bro. Dr Deo Mugema, the White Fathers were at that time being overwhelmed by their evangelistic work.
So, they deemed it right, wise and just to call in the Bothers, whose specialty was Christian education of young people. The first group of 4 Canadian Brothers, who arrived in Uganda on August 4, 1926, comprised Bro. Charles Jules Poitras, Bro. Joachim Leon, Bro. Eugene Paquette and Bro. Stanislaus Taillefer. Upon arrival, they were asked to take over the administration of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, which the White Fathers had just relocated from Lubaga.
The Brothers later took up more schools, including St. Edward Bukuumi SS, St. Henry’s College Kitovu, Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, etc. Today they man nursery schools, prominent primary schools such as St. Savio Junior School Kisubi and Mugwanya Preparatory School Kabojja, secondary schools such as Bishop Comboni College Lira Caltec Academy Makerere and St. Charles Lwanga SSS Kasasa. They also run tertiary educational institutions, the most popular one being the University of Kisubi (UniK).
