A 35-year-old man in Kisoro is in custody after allegedly murdering his elder brother over a long-running land dispute.

The suspect, Zaire Maniriho, is accused of killing Evarist Nzabarinda, 53, at their shared home in Gakoro cell, Bunagana Town Council on April 3.

Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident.

“The suspect reported himself to Bunagana Police Station around midday after the murder,” Maate said, adding that the two had been living alone and had longstanding disagreements over the property.

Police visited the crime scene, conducted a postmortem, and recorded statements from key witnesses. Investigators are now piecing together the events that led to the fatal confrontation.

Maate urged the public to seek peaceful means to resolve conflicts.

“This is a tragic reminder of why people should involve authorities and community leaders instead of resorting to violence,” he said.

The suspect will be charged with murder once investigations are complete.
