NABILATUK - A chapati maker is in Police custody at the Lorengedwat sub-county Police post in Nabilatuk district after he allegedly tried to escape justice.

The kikomando maker is accused of suffocating his girlfriend through strangulation to death in Nakapiripirit district.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon at Namalu trading centre, Namalu sub-county in Nakapiripirit, some 128km south of Moroto town.

Nevertheless, the suspect has been identified as one, “Mutwalibi” alias “Mutwalo” a resident of the same address.

However, information was not readily available as to why the chapati man allegedly killed Rose Gwaga, 20, who had just spent four months in the relationship.

The deceased was working at a nearby restaurant, a few metres from the alleged killer’s workplace.

When contacted, Karamoja Police region spokesperson Mike Longole, confirmed the incident describing it as unfortunate.

“It’s true the chapati man killed his girlfriend who they had spent four months in a relationship with,” he said, adding that the deceased went for the festive season. When she returned at the beginning of January, Gwaga went to stay with her new catch in a bedsit a few metres from the trading centre.

Quoting some of the neighbours, Longole noted that since she came back, she has been indoors with little or no communication with the neighbours.

However, she was last seen on the morning of Monday [January 22, 2024] when she came out to ease herself.

"The husband went out to conduct his daily chapati-making routine at the trading centre,'' Longole said.

According to the spokesperson, in the course of the day, Mutwalo reportedly returned home where he spent a lot of time in his room.

The delay, according to the Police, prompted his colleague Rasta to go to his place to tell him to come and fry the already steamed beans at about 5:00pm.

“He tried calling without an answer,” he said, adding that when he pushed the door, it flung open only to see the girl dead. He raised an alarm that attracted the people at the trading centre.

Longole says the suspect was arrested at Lorengedwat trading centre on January 23, 2024, while trying to escape via Moroto to a yet-to-be-disclosed destination.

He says a case of murder by domestic violence has been registered under SD 010/2024 at Namalu police post.
