Kiboga prison warder murder trial begins

The long-awaited trial of the Kiboga prison warder Moses Anguyo, who is accused of murdering four people, including his boss, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Catherine Hope, has started today (August 27), Kiboga High Court.
High Court judge Jane Okuo Kajuga is presiding over the marathon trial.
Anguyo has been indicted on four counts of murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of threatening violence. On conviction, the offences of murder and aggravated robbery attract a maximum sentence of death.
The prosecution alleges that on February 23 this year at Kiboga Hospital Road in Kiwanguzi cell in Kiboga town council, with malice aforethought, Anguyo unlawfully caused the death of Hope, Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, and Salson Niwagaba.
In regard to aggravated robbery, Anguyo is accused of robbing Grace Katusiime of her trousers and Mary Nabayiga of her Arsenal jersey, which he wore as he escaped.
Anguyo faces trial alongside his relatives Peter Anziku, Dickson Okuonzi and Hellen Amviko, who have been indicted as accessory after the fact contrary to section 366 and 367 of the Penal Code Act.
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Daisy Nabasitu and Senior State Attorney Stephen Ariong are prosecuting the matter while Swaibu Male and Kate Nakamya are representing the accused persons on state brief.
The evidence
According to the summary of the case, on the fateful day, Anguyo was issued with a gun registration no. UGPOL 565824781-32635 with 30 live ammunition, which he received by signing the armoury book.
According to the prosecution, on the fateful day at about 9:30am, Superintendent of Prisons Ivan Niwagaba came to the station and carried out an inspection.
During the inspection, he found Anguyo was communicating on his phone and cautioned him because they are not allowed to use the phones. However, he ignored him.
Consequently, Niwagaba called Hope who was the deputy in charge and they talked to him.
According to the prosecution, Niwagaba survived after he ran to the banana plantations that made it difficult for Anguyo to shoot him. After missing out on Him, Anguyo allegedly followed up Hope and shot her dead.
After killing Hope, the prosecution says Anguyo ran to Niwagaba’s car and killed his wife and their son. He also killed Akishuri, who had come to respond to the shooting.
After killing the four, the prosecution contends that Anguyo went to Katusiime and Nabayiga’s shop along the Ssaza headquarters, robbed trousers and an Arsenal jersey and took off.
After moving for a short distance, the prosecution alleges he removed the prison uniform and wore the Arsenal jersey and the trousers and took off.
Prosecution says Anziku sent him sh60,000 using a mobile money agent in Masindi, which enabled him to travel to Arua, where he lived with his other brother, Okuonzi, who later connected him to their brother who was working on a farm in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Fortunately, Anguyo was later tracked by the security agencies, arrested and brought back into the country to face trial.
The prosecution says Amviko remained in constant communication with him but failed to disclose his whereabouts.
