The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has commissioned the Christ Church Ediofe sanctuary in Arua city.

Kaziimba commissioned the church on Sunday (October 4) during a two-day pastoral visit to the diocese as part of his farewell tour.

The church, which is worth sh1.5 billion, was constructed through contributions from Christians after the foundation stone was laid in 2008.

During his visit, Kaziimba blessed and prayed for Christians at the church before officially commissioning the sanctuary for use under the Arua Urban Archdeaconry in Madi West Nile Diocese.

Kaziimba applauded Christians for their contributions towards the completion of the church and challenged them to make use of the building by regularly attending church services.

“May God bless all of you, and I pray that you utilise this place for worship because any church building without worshippers, the Lord will use rats and birds to praise him and may you use this place as a temple to worship him,” said Dr Kaziimba.

Rev. Can. Victoria Adiru, the parish priest of Christ Church Ediofe, said the commissioning of the church had brought excitement among Christians and the clergy.

Richard Anguyo, the head of laity at Christ Church Ediofe, described the commissioning as a long-awaited occasion, having waited since the foundation stone was laid in 2008.

He said he was optimistic that, despite the church's capacity of more than 2,000 people, the sanctuary could become too small in the future as the number of worshippers increases.

“We have been waiting for this occasion, and I am happy that this has come to pass, and I am very happy and give glory to God because it has been a lot of struggle since all the money has come from the Christians without any external support,” Anguyo stated.

Some Christians who acknowledged their contribution towards the construction, including some who said they had seen the Archbishop physically for the first time, described the occasion as memorable.

Beatrice Taliru, a Christian at Christ Church Ediofe, said she was grateful to have witnessed the commissioning by the Archbishop.

“I thank God that he has enabled us to pay the small coins we had, and I pray that he continues to bless us such that we continue to pay for the construction and development of the church,” said Taliru.

Lillian Aseru, another Christian, said it was a special day in her life following the commissioning of the new church. She said she was pleased to have met the archbishop physically and shaken his hand.
