KAMPALA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the recent Kawempe Division North Member of Parliament by-election, Faridah Nambi, has asked court to order for fresh polls.

Nambi, who was the first runner-up among the ten contenders, initially secured  9,058 votes, as indicated in the notice published in the Uganda Gazette by the Electoral Commission.

The election was won by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, who had 17,939 votes.

The other candidates include; Sadat Mukiibi aka Khalifah Aganaga (FDC), Henry Kasacca Mubiru (DP), Ismail Mubiru (DP), Ismail Musiitwa (PPP), Muhammed Lusswa Luwemba(independent), Hanifah Karadi Murewa(independent), Mahamood Mutuzindwa (independent), Moses Nsereko(independent) and Stanley Edward Maitum Engena (independent).

On March 24,202, the Electoral Commission published the results in the Uganda Gazette, officially confirming Nalukoola as the duly elected Member for Kawempe North.

Nalukoola took oath of office two days after his by-election victory was gazetted by the National Electoral Commission.

He replaces the late Muhammed Ssegirinya, who died in January this year before completing his term as MP.

On Friday, April 11, 2025, Nambi filed the petition at the Civil Division of the High Court against Nalukoola, seeking a declaration that the provisions of the Parliamentary Elections Act relating to elections were not complied with, that the election was not conducted in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Act, and that the failure and non-compliance affected the results of the election in a substantial manner.

Nalukoola was sued alongside the Electoral Commission.

Nambi contends that that whereas voting took place within the regular voting time of 7:00am and 4:00pm, the Electoral Commission failed to return the results of fourteen polling stations with a total number of registered voters of 16,640 yet declared a final result of the election contrary to the law.

She wants court to set aside the election of Nalukoola as the MP for Kawempe Division North Constituency.
