Following the successful 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Heads of State and Government in January 2024, Uganda is set to host a NAM ministerial midterm review meeting this month.

The meeting will take place on October 13-16 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala under the theme:Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence.”

The Ugandan government is in advanced stages of preparation for next week's meeting to ensure a smooth and successful conference.

Vincent Waiswa Bagiire, the permanent secretary of Uganda's foreign affairs ministry, said the host nation will welcome delegations from NAM member states, observer countries and organisations.

The meeting will provide a platform to deliberate on key issues affecting NAM members, including relevance amid geopolitical tensions, threats to development, peace, security, human rights, and the rule of law, the Palestine issue and the Gaza humanitarian crisis.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, after days of indirect talks in Egypt.

“Given the nature of the meeting, there will be controlled access in and around Munyonyo, and the public is requested to support the Government in ensuring the success of the conference by complying with any traffic control measures, said Bagiire.

Uganda has a long-standing relationship with NAM, having previously hosted the 8th NAM Summit in 1979 in Kampala.

That summit brought together leaders from across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East at a critical time in global geopolitics, reinforcing
Uganda’s role as a champion of the movement’s principles of sovereignty, independence, and cooperation among developing nations.

The upcoming midterm meeting builds on this legacy, showcasing Uganda’s continued commitment to NAM’s agenda.
