Kamuli students survive sugarcane truck crash

As the nation mourns the 25 pupils and teachers who perished in the grisly accident in Kapchorwa, 17 students from Nalango SS in Kamuli district are nursing grievous injuries after their bus rammed into a stationary sugarcane truck.
The incident occurred at Busota village along the Kamuli-Jinja highway on Friday, July 17, at 10:30 pm, and involved S4 and S6 candidates returning from touring Sezibwa Falls in Kayunga district.
Frances Nabirye, the Geography teacher, says the trip was intended to empower students ahead of the impending Mock Examinations.
The incident follows the grisly accident that claimed over 21 pupils and teachers of King David Junior School- Ndejje, who had gone for a study tour in Kapchorwa district.
How the accident happened
Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Samson Lubega, reported that the incident at Busota village along the Kamuli-Jinja highway involved the bus, which rammed into a stationary sugarcane-loaded truck.
“Among the 16 injured is a teacher who sustained cuts and injuries in the legs,” Frances Nabirye, the Geography teacher who was in a different bus on the same trip, said.

Several students who received medication at Kamuli General Hospital include: Ritah Nangobi, Nakabiito, Reagan Mutaka, Teacher Nicholas Eramaga, Ritah Nambi, Jessy Katumba and Falavia Nangobi,
Lubega explained that the impact of the crash dislodged the seats, pushing off the occupants and sporadically throwing them all over the Bus, before the metals dug into their heads and other body parts.
The injured students blamed the driver for being rude and being reckless.
“Right from setting off, the driver was rough and quarrelsome. He abused us and vowed to teach us a lesson we shall never forget,” a student who required anonymity said, adding that by the time the Bus rammed into the truck, the driver had already jumped out and fled the scene.
