Police detectives in Kampala have launched investigations into the murder of a 70-year-old taxi hire driver, Thomas Batiibwe Twase Muyingo, who was stabbed to death.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police regional spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, told New Vision that following the tragic incident, detectives at Nateete Police Station arrested Sinan Muwonge, a 19-year-old, as the main suspect.

The teenager is also a special hire driver operating from the same area.

Twase, a resident of Bulaga Zone B, in Ssumbwe Parish, Wakiso Sub-County, Wakiso District, was allegedly attacked and stabbed on Wednesday, September 30th, in Nateete suburbs.

The attack took place at around 6:30pm, a few meters from the street lights junction.  The victim was rushed to Rubaga Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigations  indicate that the suspect (Muwonge), using a knife, attacked and stabbed Twase, who was in the driver's seat inside a vehicle (Toyota Noah registration number UBL 731X).

“The suspect who reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident was apprehended by members of the community and handed over to police,” Kawala said.

Sarah Naggayi, who rushed to hospital after learning of the attack, revealed that the assailant left the killer's knife in her husband's neck.

Paul Tamale, quoting witnesses, narrated that her father's killer disguised himself as a client who wanted a cab ride, but suddenly turned against him before the car started.

“After he was stabbed, dad was seen struggling and pointing at the fleeing man who was immediately arrested and later handed over to Police,” Tamale added.

Sources close to the family said this was the second attack on Twase. In the 2012 attack in Kinaawa suburbs,  unknown assailants disguised as passengers also attempted to kill him using a rope."

The suspects were traced and arrested. “We cannot tell whether they are still in prison or linked to the fatal attack.

“This time the attacker's determination and the timing point to a seasoned killer, " one bereaved relative was overheard telling another mourner.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the father of the suspect reportedly fainted and collapsed upon reaching Nateete police, where he found his son in detention.

The 2025 Uganda Police Force crime report states that 292 people were murdered by stabbing, which reflected an increase of nine percent (9%) in the total number of registered homicide cases.
