KAMPALA - The three-day East African Information Security conference kicked off Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, focusing on global security.

Over 300 experts from various sectors, including information technology, financial services, telecommunications, security agencies, software and technology companies, are convening at the hotel to discuss strategies for combating international fraud, which poses a significant threat to the financial system.

Bank of Uganda deputy governor Dr Michael Atingi-Ego will be the chief guest at the 13th annual East African Information Security Conference. Dr Aminah Zawedde, the permanent secretary of the ICT and national guidance ministry will deliver the keynote address.

The conference, organised by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), is themed: Interconnected Ecosystems: Navigating the Challenges.

According to ISACA Kampala Chapter President Maurice Taremwa, the conference featured three main components, including focused learning opportunities through two masterclasses specialising in data protection, privacy and cybersecurity.

“The participants with varying interests will gain new skills and apply them in their respective organisations,” he stated.

Taremwa said the conference drives professional development by equipping specialists with relevant knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of interconnected systems.

Taremwa said this includes staying abreast of emerging technologies, evolving threats, and best practices in audit, risk management, and compliance.

“This year’s conference will explore the challenges and opportunities of building digital trust in emerging markets such as those in East Africa. While these economies are rapidly adopting digital technologies, they often face unique obstacles in establishing the trust necessary for secure and inclusive digital ecosystems,” he said.

Taremwa emphasised the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in developing a secure and trusted digital ecosystem in East Africa.

“By facilitating dialogue and partnerships between professionals, government agencies, and private sector organisations, we need to create a coordinated approach to addressing digital challenges,” he advised.
