A middle-aged Kampala businessman and renowned TikToker has been denied bail in the sh320 million gold scam.

Isa Muwonge, 49, commonly known as Katwalo, appeared before City Hall senior principal magistrate Nicholas Aisu, who denied him bail, stating that the sureties he presented were not substantial.

He had presented to court three sureties, which the state attorney, Mariam Akite, objected to, citing that, given the amounts of money involved in the matter, they had not demonstrated their financial capability to meet the costs in case the accused disappears.

Katwalo was subsequently remanded back to Luzira on October 5, 2026.

The charges

Prosecution alleges that on August 2, 2026, while at Max Metal Refinery Company offices in Bukoto, Kampala District, with intent to defraud, he obtained US $84,300 from one Muhamood Farouk Malida, promising to export seven kilograms of gold to Dubai  on his behalf but didn't.

The matter was accordingly adjourned after Akike told the court that investigations in the matter would soon be complete.
