Hundreds of Christians gathered Monday at St Janan Luwum Church of Uganda (COU) in Kaberamaido Town Council, Kaberamaido district, to commemorate Janani Luwum Day.

This day also holds special significance as the church celebrates its own day, having been named after the late Archbishop of Uganda.

The occasion focused on sharing the experiences of the late Archbishop, who was tragically killed in 1977 under the regime of Idi Amin. Moses Eyenyu, a member of the church, explained that their church was named in honour of Archbishop Luwum. "It is due to his faith that Kaberamaido named one of their churches after Janan Luwum," Eyenyu said.

In 2023, Bishop Kosea Odongo of the Soroti Church of Uganda consecrated St Janan Luwum COU, though the church had been in operation since early 1988. The Government of Uganda declared February 16 a public holiday to remember Archbishop Luwum.

Linus Ebitu, the lay reader of St Janan Luwum COU, explained that the dramatic portrayal during the service aimed to bring the reality of what occurred during that time to Christians, strengthening their faith in Jesus Christ. The youth also performed a skit to depict how Archbishop Luwum was killed during Amin's regime.

Denis Okola, the chairperson of the laity at St Janan Luwum COU, Kaberamaido, stated that the young people had received accurate information through the drama, media reports, and stories from those who were there at the time.

The Archdeacon of Kaberamaido Archdeaconry, who presided over the service, highlighted the courage of the late Archbishop Luwum. He noted that Luwum’s bravery was meant to inspire transformation both in the country and the world. "The heart of Luwum should continue touching the minds of Christians, urging them to be willing to die for the truth and bring about a positive change in the world," he said.
