The former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has lauded Kabale diocese for providing education, healthcare, and other social and development projects to the society, as it marks 100 years of Our Lady of Good Shepherd, Rushoroza Deanery.

“I congratulate Kabale Diocese as it celebrates 100 years of Our Lady of Good Shepherd, Rushoroza Deanery,” Rugunda tweeted today, January 7, 2024.

The former Premier also thanked Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, the Bishop, and his predecessors, for their good leadership that has enabled the diocese to make commendable contributions to society.

Since its inception, the Kabale diocese has been led by several bishops including Rt. Rev. Gervase Nkalanga, Rt. Rev. Barnabas Halem’Imana, and Rt. Rev. Robert Mary Gay.

Rushoroza Deanery is located in the Kabale District. It has four parishes namely: Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral Parish; Our Lady of Assumption Rwanyena Parish, Holy Family Buhara Parish, and Christ the King Parish Kabale.

History

Kabale Diocese was erected on April 17, 1966, curved out of Mbarara Diocese which up to 1956 formed part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Rwenzori.

On its inception as a diocese, the Rev. Bishop Gervasius Placidus Nkalanga (late) of Bukoba Diocese, a native of Tanzania was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the newly erected diocese.


Three years later, on August 1, 1969, Bishop Emeritus Barnabas Halem’Imana ( late) was appointed and consecrated as the first native Residential Bishop.

He retired on July 15, 1994, and was succeeded by Bishop Emeritus Robert Mary Gay ( late), who was first appointed as Apostolic Administrator but was on March 9, 1996 ordained Bishop.

He retired in 2003 and was succeeded by the current Bishop, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira. He was ordained Bishop at Rushoroza on June 8, 2003. Kabale has been a suffragan Diocese within the Archdiocese of Mbarara since 1999.
