KAMPALA - A former engineering student of the International University of East Africa (IUEA) has manufactured a smart ventilator.

The ventilator, which has been named the IUEA smart ventilator, was created to help people with respiratory disorders.

This innovation comes at a timely moment when COVID-19 is still in our presence.

“It works the same way ventilators work." "It helps people whose lungs are badly damaged or collapsed to breathe properly,” said Alex Kamugisha.

The ventilator also measures the heart rate and temperature of the person before it can be administered to them.

The ventilator is mounted with a light on top of it. This light can either be turned on automatically or through a motion sensor that can detect motion from 12 meters away. Upon detection, the light will automatically turn on itself.

"During the night, you don’t need to look for the switches to turn on the light; instead the ventilator will detect motion from a distance and simply turn it on," said Kamugisha.

The ventilator was entirely made in Uganda by a Ugandan. However, if supported by the government, the vice chancellor, Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa, said they would be able to contribute to the health system in Uganda.

He gave credit to their education system, which not only teaches but also encourages doing.

“The value of educational institutions is to create solutions to existing problems by teaching students how to do and not just talk,” said the professor.
