RAILA ODINGA: 1945 - 2025
The state funeral of Kenya's former prime minister Raila Odinga was held Friday (October 17) at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, with thousands of people, including foreign dignitaries, in attendance.
Odinga died aged 80 on Wednesday (October 15) from a suspected heart attack during a health trip in India.
Winnie Odinga said her father died strong, with dignity and with pride. Dr Oburu Odinga said his now late younger brother was "my friend, my agemate, my adviser, my confidant, and everything including business partnership".
The elder Odinga told mourners that Raila died on his (Oburu's) birthday. He said even though his beloved sibling was younger than him, "I respected him as my leader in the political arena". Oburu added that he welcomed the decision of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party to appoint him the acting party leader. "Even though the shoes of Raila are too big to be filled, I will try my best."
Oburu urged everyone to "keep the spirit of Raila burning".

Glowing tributes have flowed for the late statesman, whose body arrived in Nairobi Thursday morning, followed by a
public viewing — led by President William Ruto and the Odinga family — at Kasarani Stadium in the Kenyan capital.
On Wednesday, President Ruto declared seven days of national mourning, also according Odinga a state funeral on Friday with full military honours. On Saturday, Odinga's body will be moved to Kisumu city in Kenya's west. There will also be a public viewing there at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium.
On Sunday, the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader will be laid to rest in Bondo.
