RAILA ODINGA: 1945 - 2025
Public viewing of the body of former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga took place Thursday (October 16) at the Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani Stadium) in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
A large number of people made their way to the 48-seater stadium to pay their respects to Odinga, who died aged 80 on Wednesday from a suspected heart attack during a health trip in India.
His body arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Thursday morning on a Kenya Airways flight that also carried a team of officials and family members who had departed from Nairobi to India the evening before for the repatriation.

Upon arrival, a large group of supporters of the late statesman were already at Kenya's main airport to greet his Kenyan flag-draped casket. So overwhelming was the atmosphere that the civil aviation authority was forced to temporarily suspend operations to "restore order and ensure safety", AFP reported.

The large crowd of mourners, holding up twigs and palm leaves, joined the procession from the airport, filling up the motorway.

The initial plan was to have the public viewing of the body at the parliament building. But due to an expected surge in numbers, the venue was changed to Moi International Sports Centre, as known as Kasarani Stadium.

Odinga's body arrived at the stadium to a large expectant crowd both inside and outside the facility.

Later, chaotic scenes played out inside the stadium as security forces fired teargas and gunshots to disperse surging crowds that had reportedly tried to break into the VIP section. This sparked pandemonium, with many fleeing in panic.

Meanwhile, in the VIP area, President William Ruto, members of Odinga's family and other dignitaries gathered for a viewing of the body.
It started with prayers after the casket was opened. Then one after another, the officials queued to pay their respects to the former prime minister and legislator.
After Ruto, Odinga's family led by Ida Odinga, the widow, followed. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and others were next.

Inside the casket, an orange sash was seen dressed around the neck of Odinga in tribute to his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which he led. His beloved hat was also placed on the casket.
While some waved during the viewing, others bowed and saluted in honour of a man revered by many at home and abroad.

A state funeral will be held at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday. On Saturday, Odinga's body will be moved to Kisumu city in Kenya's west. There will also be a public viewing there.
On Sunday, Odinga, who had desired to be buried within 72 hours, will be laid to rest at his farm in Bondo.
On Wednesday, President Ruto declared seven days of mourning, also according Odinga a state funeral with full military honours.
