IGP orders eviction of illegal occupants from Nsambya Police Barracks

The police boss said the exercise would also target police officers who have been transferred to sub-county police stations but have refused to take up their new deployments.

Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba has ordered the immediate eviction of unauthorised residents of Nsambya Police Barracks, warning that the Force will identify who is occupying the facility and take action against those staying there illegally.

Byakagaba issued the directive yesterday (August 17) while inspecting the Nsambya Police Barracks in Kampala, where he also met police officers and their spouses and listened to concerns about their living conditions.

The police boss said the exercise would also target police officers who have been transferred to sub-county police stations but have refused to take up their new deployments.

“Those who aren’t bona fide residents of Nsambya Barracks should leave immediately. We are going to find out who sleeps in the barracks. Those who were transferred to sub-counties and refused to go will be found out and dealt with,” Byakagaba warned.

He said the directive is part of efforts to restore order, discipline and dignity in police accommodation facilities and ensure that barracks are occupied by officers and families that are legitimately entitled to the housing.

Byakagaba said Nsambya Barracks is not simply a residential facility but a strategic centre for housing police personnel and supporting deployment within the Kampala Metropolitan Police area.

“We assemble here today to emphasise that Nsambya Barracks is not merely a residential area; it is a strategic hub for personnel housing and deployment within Kampala Metropolitan Police,” he said.

The police chief acknowledged the challenges facing officers and their families, adding that the Force would implement immediate interventions during the current financial year to improve conditions at the barracks.

“Security and welfare begin at home. Aware of the challenges you face, we are rolling out immediate interventions in this financial year to restore dignity, safety and order at Nsambya Barracks,” he said.

According to Byakagaba, improving police officers’ welfare is critical to effective policing, arguing that officers who live in safe, decent and orderly environments are better positioned to serve and protect the public.

The police boss also urged residents to embrace discipline, cleanliness, responsibility and cooperation as the Force moves to transform police accommodation facilities into safer and more dignified communities.

The inspection was attended by senior police officers, including the Director of Health Services, Dr Moses Byaruhanga, and Under Secretary Aggrey Wunyi.
