How to transform your home with artificial turf

Looking to transform your home or workplace into a green paradise? Consider artificial grass, also called modern synthetic turf. It is a versatile, accessible and low-maintenance décor item.

At the home, both the indoors and outdoors are green, showing how artificial grass has evolved into a unique décor element that enhances the aesthetics and functionality of modern homes and commercial spaces.

There is more beauty when artificial grass is blended with natural or artificial landscape accessories such as plants, hammocks and fountains. Halera chose artificial plants in three shades: green, yellow and brown.

One step inside the compound and you are welcomed by different green nooks and a rock garden, with a pot surrounded by white pebbles and artificial grass patches.

In front of the house is a roofed fireplace with a gigantic fountain in the corner and a shade tree in the middle. The space seats more than 30 people, while the artificial grass carpet elevates the surrounding landscape.

A practical alternative

Modern synthetic turf offers a good alternative to a natural lawn, according to Ben Mitala, a professional landscaper with Mitala Classic Compound Designs in Kampala. “It is realistic and comes with a variety of benefits,” he says.

Artificial grass adds a natural touch while reducing maintenance. It can withstand heavy foot traffic and general wear and tear, making it suitable for playgrounds, recreation centres and commercial spaces.

It also eliminates the need for regular mowing, watering and fertilising. The turf stays green all year round, making it particularly useful in areas that are hot, dry or affected by water scarcity.

Artificial grass can also work wonders indoors, in gyms, restaurants, boutiques, offices and hospitality spaces. An indoor green zone can create an inviting environment where people relax, socialise or even work.

“You can imagine being in a conference hall and stepping on green grass,” Mitala says. It can also be used on rooftops, terraces, children’s play areas, stairs and even as doormats.

Installation and care

• Prepare and level the ground.
• Provide proper drainage and lay a firm base of crushed stone and sand.
• Roll out the turf with the fibres facing the same direction
• Trim the edges neatly and secure it with nails. When joining pieces, use joining tape and glue to seal the seams.
• Avoid stretching the grass and apply sand infill where recommended to keep the fibres upright.
• Indoors: vacuum regularly and spot-clean stains with mild soap and water.
  
  

With proper care, indoor artificial grass can last between eight and 15 years.
