Hoima, Kikuube communities hail National cleaning day initiative
On Saturday, communities in the company of their leaders cleaned different spots, including ungazetted dump sites.

To leaders and communities in Kikuube and Hoima City, the introduction of the National Cleaning Day has been long overdue.
On Saturday, communities in the company of their leaders cleaned different spots, including ungazetted dump sites.
Several main roads in Hoima City and Kikuube district were blocked by Uganda Police personnel to intercept those who failed to honour the day.
In Hoima City, residents of Kiganda cell, led by Hoima City woman member of Parliament Asinasi Nyakato and MP Ismael Kasule, cleaned Kabakaikuru water well covered by bush and Duhanga Rusembe neighbourhood.
Joseph Mwesigwa, a Senior Resident and Duhanga Rusembe, described the "clean up" exercise as a revival of Burungibwasi, a community drive tasking individuals to take care of the infrastructure in their localities.
He proposed that two days are allocated to the campaign.
For MP Nyakato, the day will enable citizens to appreciate their responsibility to keep their homes clean and fix community roads without waiting for the government.
"Once the citizens embrace the exercise, 90% of the diseases caused by poor sanitation will be reduced," she added.

MP Ismael Kasule said that as they implement this initiative, there should be deliberate effort to sensitise the public to ensure that they develop good discipline in disposing of garbage.
Kikuube residents speak out
For David Atuhura, a resident and director of Buhaguzi Model Secondary School in Buhimba Town Council, Kikuube district, this initiative is going to restore sanitation sanity among the public.
John Murungi, a resident of Kigende cell in Buhimba Town Council, challenged the government to empower local leaders to enforce this initiative, adding that some people stayed in their houses. He noted that there is a need to make this day vibrant like it was in previous years.
Kikuube resident district commissioner Godwin Angalia promised that as leaders, they will continue sensitising the public to understand the importance of the initiative.
