Denis Olyeko, the president of the Local Brokers’ Association, who has worked in real estate for more than two decades, acknowledged that some brokers encourage landlords to increase rent because they stand to benefit from higher payments by tenants. “It is common for agents to negotiate with landlords to set a higher rent. For example, when a tenant moves out, an agent may lobby the landlord to increase the rent before a new tenant moves in,” he said.
