A security guard was killed and his firearm stolen during an attack at a coffee store in Mubende district, police have said.

Joseph Mutegule, 40, who had worked with Uganda Securico Company Limited for 15 years, was guarding Artica Coffee International stores in Kagavu, Budibaga parish, Kalonga subcounty, when unidentified attackers stormed his post at about 5:00 am on July 25, 2026.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said the assailants assaulted the guard in his room before dragging him about 200 metres into a nearby bush, where he was later found unconscious. The attackers made off with a rifle, serial number UG 30373337E104297, together with three rounds of ammunition.

A caretaker at the store discovered the guard and attempted to rush him to hospital, but he died en route. The incident was reported to police by Apollo Muhereza, a resident of Greater Kalonga.

A joint team from Mubende Central Police Station and the district DPC visited the scene, which investigators said had been tampered with before their arrival, limiting the effectiveness of a police canine unit brought in to track the attackers. The scene has since been examined and documented, and witness statements recorded.

The victim's body was taken to Mubende Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police, working with the Regional Flying Squad Unit, are pursuing the suspects and the stolen weapon.

Authorities have cautioned private security firms against deploying single, unarmed backup guards at facilities, warning that solo postings leave both guards and premises vulnerable to attack. Residents of Kalonga subcounty have been urged to share any information that could assist the investigation.
