Guard arrested after Soroti shooting leaves businessman injured

Police in the East Kyoga Region are investigating a case of attempted murder by shooting that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Agip cell, Soroti East division, Soroti city.
The incident involved a security guard identified as Olakitari Joseph, 32, attached to TAN International Company, who allegedly discharged a firearm during a confrontation with businessman Abudu Mwanika, 50, a resident of Soroti city.
According to preliminary findings, Mwanika had gone to the Pepsi depot on the Soroti–Mbale Road to retrieve a vehicle battery that had earlier been impounded over an outstanding debt of about sh600,000. A disagreement then arose between him and the security guard on duty.
It is alleged that Mwanika advanced towards the guard while armed with a hammer, prompting the guard to fire a single round from a pump-action rifle. Mwanika sustained injuries to his left arm, while another victim, Atim Mary, 18, who was nearby, was hit by pellets on the upper back.
He added that both victims were rushed for medical attention and are currently receiving treatment. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while police have urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid violence.
