Guard arrested after Soroti shooting leaves businessman injured

Police in the East Kyoga Region are investigating a case of attempted murder by shooting that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Agip cell, Soroti East division, Soroti city.

The incident involved a security guard identified as Olakitari Joseph, 32, attached to TAN International Company, who allegedly discharged a firearm during a confrontation with businessman Abudu Mwanika, 50, a resident of Soroti city.

According to preliminary findings, Mwanika had gone to the Pepsi depot on the Soroti–Mbale Road to retrieve a vehicle battery that had earlier been impounded over an outstanding debt of about sh600,000. A disagreement then arose between him and the security guard on duty.

It is alleged that Mwanika advanced towards the guard while armed with a hammer, prompting the guard to fire a single round from a pump-action rifle. Mwanika sustained injuries to his left arm, while another victim, Atim Mary, 18, who was nearby, was hit by pellets on the upper back.
