The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (March 2) said it had successfully evacuated 43 Ugandan students who were stuck in Tehran, Iran’s capital city, amid heavy bombardment by the United States of America and Israel.
The students have since arrived safely in Turkey, permanent secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa confirmed.
“We have been able to evacuate 43 students from Tehran, and they have since arrived in Turkey,” he said.
The evacuation comes as Iran continues to experience intense hostilities following coordinated military action by US and Israeli forces against Iranian targets, including sites in Tehran and other urban areas.
The conflict, which escalated sharply in late February, has triggered widespread anxiety among foreign nationals living and studying in Iran.
Explosions and airspace closures have been reported in major Middle East cities, prompting governments around the world to urge their citizens to exercise caution and seek to leave if possible.
