The Government has assured the management of Atiak Sugar Factory in Amuru District of its continued support to enable the completion of its investment phase and the commencement of production.

The assurance was given by the finance ministry permanent secretary Ramathan Ggoobi, on April 12, 2025, while assessing the factory's progress, which his ministry described as a transformative investment in northern Uganda.

Accompanied by his technical team, Ggoobi applauded the factory’s management for adopting modern farming practices, including mechanisation, irrigation, and the use of fertilisers.

This is according to a statement released by the ministry on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“He assured management of Atiak Sugar Factory that the Government will continue to support them to complete the investment phase of the sugar factory so that they can go into production,” the statement said.

It also noted that Ggoobi, who also serves as Secretary to the Treasury, urged the factory’s management, led by chief executive officer Amina Hersi, to focus on results and deliver value for money.

The sugar factory, which sits on 30,000 acres of land, is described by the ministry as a strategic and model private-sector-led impact investment that promises to accelerate agro-industrialisation and agro-tourism in the region.

“The factory is well positioned to contribute to the share of Uganda’s manufactured exports under the tenfold growth strategy,” it stated.

Hersi expressed gratitude to the Government for its unwavering partnership and support.
The Government, through the Uganda Development Corporation, has so far invested over sh500 billion in the factory.

Its intervention took place between the financial years 2017/2018 and 2022/2023, during which it purchased and acquired equity shares in the factory.
