The Police in Kisoro, western Uganda, have evacuated 60 passengers from a Gateway bus that has overturned and injured 18 passengers.
The Tuesday, May 27, 2025, about 10:50am crash on the Kabale-Kisoro road happened when a Scania bus, registration number UBK 804Y belonging to Gateway Bus Company, lost control and overturned at what is popularly known as Chanakye Red Corner in Kanaba sub-county, Kisoro district.
According to the Police, the driver of the bus, Julius Owoyesigire, 40, a resident of Nyabihoko in Ntungamo district, allegedly tried to apply the brakes while the vehicle was in motion at a steep slope, in vain.
“By the time the driver applied brakes, it was too late and lost control, failing to negotiate the sharp corner, forcing the bus to overturn,” Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate, in a statement released on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, said.
He adds that at least 18 passengers were injured and out of these, three sustained serious injuries and 15 got minor ones.
The injured were rushed to various health facilities, including an eight-month-old baby. This is the second crash in two days involving a Gateway bus in the same region.
The earlier crash occurred on Sunday morning at Muhanga along the Ntungamo-Kabale highway in Rukiga district.
At least 50 passengers on board were evacuated after the bus derailed and overturned, injuring several passengers and a pedestrian who was walking on the shoulders and lost her leg.

Maate said the bus was later towed and parked at Kisoro Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as inquiries continue.
