LUWERO - Residents of Buyego A village in Ndejje town council in Luwero district are in shock after unknown persons attacked and killed their animals by cutting off their heads and taking away some of the internal organs of the animals.

The village has about 1,000 residents who earn their living by animal rearing and growing food crops.

They are mainly interested in farming and raising pigs, goats, cattle and other animals, which have done a great job in supporting their families.

However, the residents are currently in fear after a group of unidentified people attacked the village on Sunday (April 13th) and hacked to death several domestic animals. Most affected were families that rear pigs.

"They cut off some of the heads of the goats and pigs, removed the hearts, but left the meat," narrated Moses Kijjambu, one of the victims.

Kijjambu said they do not know the cause of the theft because they are all wondering about the motive of the culprits because no one will steal a pig or a goat, remove the internal organs and leave the meat behind.

Gertrude Nalugya, another resident, lost 10 pigs. Attributing the thuggery to unemployed youths, she narrated waking up to a horrific scene with all the 10 pigs beheaded and legs chopped off.

Wasswa Daniel Nsubuga, who lost five pigs and one sheep, said he woke up to a rude shock when the torso of the cow carcass "greeted" him when he opened the door. The attackers, he added, had taken away the heads and feet.

Vigilant groups set up

Emanuel Kafeero, in an interview with New Vision, said residents have since set up a team to conduct night patrols.

The surveillance, he added, has since provided leads to the gang terrorising the village.

"The other day, we encountered a group of youths at 2:00 am. As they fled our cordon, one of them, who has since been identified as Dickson Sekabemb,e dropped his national identity card.

He has since gone into hiding, making him the main suspect.

Juliet Nalugya, the village chairman, said that although the case has been reported to Bombo police station, the suspects remain at large.

Police explain

Savannah police spokesperson Sam Tweineamazima said that although they have the list of suspects, all the accused still remain at large.

In the meantime, he urged the victims to report to police and record statements about the incident.

"The information given will help prosecution to process the court documents," he advised.
