Four killed in Kampala-Masaka highway crash
“It is alleged that MV CGO9638AF/19/CGO.6561AA/19 Mecedes Benz trailer being driven by one Syaunswa Kanyamunyu, who is now deceased, was from Masaka side heading to Kampala and upon reaching Matanga hill, it overtook another vehicle and it collided head on with motor vehicle registration number UBQ 238Q, a white Fuso Box body, which was from Kampala side heading to Masaka,” said Kasirye.
“One unidentified passenger in the Fuso truck survived and was rushed to Masaka referral hospital for treatment. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the Masaka referral hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations,” Kasirye added.

Four people had been confirmed dead in a fatal road accident that happened at Matanga (Ndikuttamadda) along the Kampala-Masaka highway in Masaka city.
Twaha Kasirye, the Masaka East and West regional spokesperson said the accident happened at around 12:05am on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
He said the accident involved two vehicles; a Fuso box body and a Mercedes Benz trailer.
“It is alleged that MV CGO9638AF/19/CGO.6561AA/19 Mecedes Benz trailer being driven by one Syaunswa Kanyamunyu, who is now deceased, was from Masaka side heading to Kampala and upon reaching Matanga hill, it overtook another vehicle and it collided head on with motor vehicle registration number UBQ 238Q, a white Fuso Box body, which was from Kampala side heading to Masaka,” said Kasirye.
He noted that the accident also killed the three occupants in the Fuso Box body, bringing the death toll to four people.
“One unidentified passenger in the Fuso truck survived and was rushed to Masaka referral hospital for treatment. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the Masaka referral hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations,” Kasirye added.
He noted that the accident also killed the three occupants in the Fuso Box body, bringing the death toll to four people.

He said the cause of accident was still under inquiry. However, preliminary findings indicate it may have been caused by the careless overtaking by the trailer driver.
The fatal accident comes in the wake of last Thursday’s tragic road crash involving pupils of King David Junior School, which occurred at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road, where 23 children travelling in a school bus died together with their school director after the vehicle lost control.
While releasing the 2025 annual traffics statistics in April this year, the director traffic and road safety, Assistant Inspector General of Police Lawrence Niwabiine said a total of 26,044 road traffic crashes were reported last year compared to 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024, representing an increase of 3.7 percent.
Niwabiine said that of the 26,044 crashes, 4,602 were fatal; meaning that there was a life or more lost in these accidents, 3,563 were serious, while 7,879 were minor.
In these accidents, the deaths shot up by 4.7% from 5,144 in 2024 to 5,383 in 2025. Serious injuries also increased by 8.4% from 17,013 in 2024 to 18,444 in 2025.
