WAKISO - When Deborah Nakawome walked out of a bank in Ntinda after withdrawing sh21m, she did not know some people had taken notice.
It only dawned on the 27-year-old resident of Buwaate in Wakiso district that someone was after her money as she headed home on a boda boda.
A few metres from a police station in Najjera, one of two men on a fast-approaching motorcycle snatched her bag, which contained the money. The victim's instinctive distress alarm prompted a swift response from police officers nearby.
While the rider managed to escape through the heavy traffic, as it was unsafe for officers to open any fire, the bag snatcher — identified as 27-year-old Hussein Wagaba from Kayunga in Wakiso district — was arrested and the bag recovered with its contents.
A little over a week since that March 6 incident, the Police have arrested more suspects in connection with a series of robberies targeting bank clients within Nansana Division in Wakiso district.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, said Tuesday that four suspects linked to the said robberies have been arrested.
This followed intelligence-led operations conducted between March 10 and March 14 in Nansana.
“The suspects are alleged to have been waylaying individuals returning from banking halls and robbing them of their cash and other valuables," said Oweyesigyire.
"During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to participating in several robbery incidents targeting bank clients, including those around Base Hotel and other banking points within Nansana."
From what Police say they have found out so far, the suspected robbers arm themselves with machetes (pangas) and use motorcycles as a means of transport to facilitate their quick escape from crime scenes.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of their criminal network and to apprehend any other accomplices still at large," said Oweyesigyire.
"Police have urged members of the public, especially bank clients, to remain vigilant and to seek escort or use safer means when carrying large sums of money."
