Former Foreign Affairs minister Gen. (rtd) Jeje Odongo survived a road crash in Soroti City that left a juvenile girl dead.

The crash occurred at about 5:00pm on Saturday, November 7, along the Soroti-Lira highway in Nakatunya, Soroti City, as Odongo travelled to his home in Orungo, Amuria District.

Odongo, who represents Orungo County in Parliament, reportedly sustained minor injuries, including an injury to his ear and bruises on one leg.

His personal assistant, Pius Elubu, confirmed the incident, saying the crash happened when a girl riding a bicycle suddenly entered the road and was hit by the vehicle Odongo was travelling in.

"It's true we got involved in a road crash when a girl, who was riding a bicycle, entered the road seconds after the general's lead vehicle had crossed. Efforts by the General's driver to save the girl failed because it was an abrupt incident, causing the vehicle to overturn," Elubu said.

Odongo had travelled from Kampala to Soroti City, where he made a brief stopover before proceeding to his home village in Orungo.

Elubu said the general was rushed to a private clinic in Soroti City, where he received treatment and was discharged minutes later.

One of his bodyguards, who was travelling in the same vehicle, also sustained an injury to the mouth but was equally treated and discharged.

"As we speak, we have already reached home in Orungo," Elubu said.

The deceased girl was identified by the traffic police as Suzan Adongo, 15, a resident of Amen B in Soroti City West.

“The girl suddenly made a U-turn after the lead vehicle crossed, not knowing that the honourable's vehicle was following it. She was crashed to death, and her body was taken to the Soroti City mortuary,” said Edwin Kushaba, the officer in charge of traffic in Soroti City.

Elubu said Odongo intends to return to Soroti on Sunday morning to visit the family of the deceased girl.
