Five suspects arrested over double murder of coffee farm couple in Kassanda

Police have arrested five people in connection with the murder of a couple who worked on a coffee farm in Kassanda district earlier this month in the Wamala policing region.
Unidentified attackers raided the home of one Lukwago in Lukira village, Myanzi subcounty, on July 2, 2026, killing his employees, Joseph Ssali, 48, and his wife, Regina Mariza, and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash and seven bags of coffee.
Village chairman Sulaiman Kakinda led residents in recovering Ssali's body the following day and reported the killing to Myanzi Police Station. His wife's body was found six days later, partially buried in the neighbouring village of Kyaseta.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said investigators built the case through a series of leads gathered at the crime scene, leading to the arrest of one suspect in Masaka city, followed by four others in Myanzi subcounty.

The suspects have been identified as Joan Nakavuma, 38, of Katwe, Masaka city; Kasumba Babangida, 26, a casual worker from Kalama, Myanzi parish; Meddy Nsereko, alias Baamu Mukooki, 32, also of Kalama; Damian Kule, 24, a farmer and boda boda rider from Kalama; and John Yamulemye, alias Doctor, 23, a casual worker from Kalama.
Police said several exhibits had been recovered, including motorcycles allegedly used by the suspects to travel to and from the crime scene.
Kigozi attributed the arrests to a combination of investigative work and forensic tools, including tracking devices, CCTV footage and canine units, and appealed to the public to continue cooperating with police.
The five suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once the Resident State Attorney for Kassanda sanctions charges against them.
