Five suspects arrested after foiled mobile money robbery plot in Kampala

KAMPALA - Police in Kampala have foiled a planned robbery targeting a mobile money agent in Wandegeya, a Kampala suburb.

Five suspects believed to be behind a string of violent robberies across the city have since been arrested.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police South, detectives acted on intelligence received on Thursday morning (May 14) about a gang allegedly preparing to attack a person expected to ferry cash from Kalerwe to a bank agent in Wandegeya.

According to police reports, the suspects were reportedly monitoring the victim and planning to strike during the transaction. 

The Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, reported that police quickly mounted an operation that led to the arrest of the five men before the robbery could be carried out.

In her statement issued today (May 15 she revealed that two motorcycles suspected to have been intended for use in the operation, registration numbers UGG 664A and UMA 567JW, were impounded during the crackdown.

Police identified the suspects as Ivan Gizamba, described as a key suspect, Rogers Muyingo, Ashford Juma, Musa Masiga, and James Wanyama.

According to Investigations, Gizamba is believed to be linked to several aggravated robberies in the Kampala Metropolitan area, including attacks connected to Kitezi Hardware Shop in Wakiso District, Gwanda Mall and Centenary Bank in Kampala.
