Five people are feared dead after a boat capsized on Lake Kyoga in Kateta subcounty, Serere District, during heavy rains and strong winds on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:00pm as seven fishermen attempted to return to their island home after spending the day on the mainland.
According to eyewitnesses, the group was travelling in a small fishing boat when it was overwhelmed by strong winds and rough waters triggered by a heavy downpour. The boat overturned, throwing all seven occupants into the lake.
Two fishermen managed to swim to safety and were later rescued in the Pacoto area. The survivors raised an alarm, prompting local residents and authorities to begin search efforts.
By Tuesday morning, the bodies of the five missing fishermen had not yet been recovered, and their identities had not been officially established.
Kasim Otim, a resident of Kateta, confirmed the incident and said the fishermen were caught up in dangerous weather conditions while attempting to cross the lake.
Rose, a resident of Pacoto, said the fishermen had earlier travelled from the island and were returning home when tragedy struck.
Search and recovery operations are ongoing as local authorities and residents continue efforts to locate the missing fishermen.
