Fisherman accused of killing wife as marital tensions spill over

Police in Kalangala district have arrested a 56-year-old fisherman, Ibrahim Nsereko, for allegedly killing his wife following a domestic dispute reportedly linked to childlessness and allegations of adultery.
The incident happened at about 8:00 pm on September 12, 2026, at Kkusu landing site on Buyovu Island, in the house where Nsereko lived with his wife.
Nsereko, a fisherman at the landing site, is accused of killing Juliet Kinyonyozi, 38, a farmer with whom he had lived for about three years.
Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka regional police spokesperson, told New Vision that Nsereko was arrested on a murder charge and remains in custody as investigations continue.
“It is said that this man had, from time to time, been having misunderstandings with his wife resulting from the man demanding the wife to give birth to his child,” he said.
Police also suspect that allegations of adultery contributed to the escalating conflict between the couple.
“We have also learnt that this man has been suspecting his wife of having an affair that escalated the situation, leading to this action,” added Twaha.
Innocent Nshemerirwe, an eyewitness who says he had known Nsereko for 10 years, said they were surprised by his action and that the matter could have been resolved by local council leaders.
"Earlier, he bought a new panga, which we thought was for his wife since she's a farmer; however, yesterday evening, they had a fight we thought was a normal fight," said Nshemerirwe.
He said they became concerned after the couple fell silent and went to check what had happened, only to find Kinyonyozi's body lying lifeless and covered in blood.
"He cut off one hand, cut her three times on the neck, and after that he fled into a forest near the barracks," added Nshemerirwe.
Kinyonyozi's body was taken to Kalangala Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, while Nsereko remains detained at Kalangala Central Police Station.
