The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has congratulated Oyam North County MP-elect Dr Eunice Apio. 

According to the FDC, the win was "well-deserved", though the party says it is concerned about what it describes as electoral violence which they say transpired throughout the voting process.

Uganda People's Congress (UPC) flag-bearer Apio was declared winner of the byelection on Thursday last week.

Addressing the media at FDC headquarters at Najjanankumbi in Kampala on Monday, deputy party spokesperson John Kikonyogo said Apio was still "traumatised by the electoral events".

"The declared winner has not even celebrated the win. She is still narrating the tale of the byelection. This shows you how shocking the whole process treated participants," Kikonyogo said.

Apio Otuko was declared the winner of Oyam North byelection on Thursday July 6, with 15,718 votes (47.38% of the valid votes cast).

Apio beat three other contestants including National Restance Movement's Samuel Okello Engola who garnered 15,161 votes.

Engola is the son of the former Oyam North MP Charles Okello Engola who was shot dead by his bodyguard in May 2023.

Samuel Engola was followed by the Democratic Party’s Freddy Newton Okello (714 votes).

National Unity Platform’s Daniel Okello polled 403 votes.

A total of 32,751 votes were cast. However, 755 votes were declared invalid.

On July 7, 2023, President Yoweri Museveni congratulated UPC in a statement saying: "I congratulate our allies."

Before, Museveni had issued another statement, directing probe into the electoral-related violence in the Bukedea LC 5 by-election. The probe has led to the arrest of over five officials including the Bukedea Resident District Commissioner and district Police commander.
