Authorities have been alarmed by the grim statistics revealed in the weekly road crash report for February 12-18, 2024.

Police Traffic and Road Safety Directorate spokesperson Michael Kananura said a total of 392 road crashes occurred during this time, resulting in 65 fatalities and 320 injuries across the country.

Among the deceased, according to the report, were 22 pedestrians, 22 motorcyclists and five passengers on motorcycles, showing the vulnerability of various road users.

“Careless overtaking, speeding, following too closely and sudden entrance from the roadside were cited as major contributing factors to these accidents” Kananura made the remarks on Monday while addressing journalists on Monday at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

Kafu accident

One particularly tragic incident occurred in Kafu on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, where a collision involving two motor vehicles claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others injured, according to Kananura.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that careless overtaking was the cause of the crash," he said.

In response to these alarming statistics, Kananura said: "Authorities have announced plans to intensify operations targeting vehicles lacking emergency warning signs, those in dangerous mechanical condition and motorcyclists without proper safety gear and permits.

“Road safety sensitisation campaigns are also being conducted nationwide to promote behavioural changes and adherence to road safety practices,” he added.

According to Kananura, specific guidelines have been provided to address the risks associated with overtaking, emphasizing the importance of caution and awareness of hazardous areas.

Citizens are encouraged to report traffic violations and concerns through a toll-free number and various social media platforms.
