Shock and grief have engulfed the community of Juma parish in Kamdini subcounty, Oyam district, following a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 46-year-old pedestrian.
The victim was reportedly killed on the spot after a motor vehicle with registration number UAL 584W collided head-on with a motorcycle bearing registration number UFD 155T on June 2, 2026, at about 7:50pm in Dicunyi village, near the weighbridge along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
North Kyoga regional police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident.
He said the motor vehicle, a white Fuso Fighter registration number UAL 584W, was travelling from Kampala towards Gulu and was being driven by a yet-to-be-identified driver when it collided head-on with the motorcycle, a red Bajaj registration number UFD 155T.
Okema identified the deceased as Abdul Ogwang, also known as Uhuru, a resident of Onea 'B' village in Juma parish, Kamdini subcounty. He was travelling from Gulu towards Kampala at the time of the crash.
The deceased's body was retrieved and taken to Pope John Hospital Aber mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The vehicles involved in the crash are being guarded at the Kamdini weighbridge pending removal.
Okema said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, he noted that the driver of the motor vehicle is on the run.
"We advised him to report to the nearest police facility for investigation," he said.
An eyewitness, Richard Ekuka, the LC1 chairperson of Dicunyi village in Juma parish, Kamdini subcounty, said the motorcycle rider was attempting to avoid a mentally ill person who was walking in the middle of the road.
He said this was the 12th incident recorded in the area and that nearly five people had lost their lives as a result of previous crashes.
