Family demands investigation after mother, baby die during childbirth in Serere

Authorities in Serere District have called for calm following the death of a 25-year-old woman and her newborn baby shortly after birth at Serere Health Centre IV.
The deceased, Esther Amoding, a nursery schoolteacher from Nyero in Kumi District, died alongside her baby boy while in the labour ward. Amoding was married in Serere.
The family and community members have accused health workers of negligence, alleging that patients are sometimes left in the hands of volunteers while medical staff are away.

The deceased's grandfather, Christopher Angicu, also expressed disappointment over the incident.
Meanwhile, Serere Resident District Commissioner John Stephen Ekoom urged both families to remain calm, saying investigations will establish what happened and warned against any actions that could cause insecurity.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Serere District Health Officer and the Serere Health Centre IV administration were unsuccessful.
The deceased's family has also indicated that customary marriage requirements must be fulfilled before burial arrangements proceed.
