One of the taekwondo players who has qualified to represent Uganda in the East African Taekwondo Championship, Denis Etengu says he is set to go and show his best performance.

Speaking from his training wing at MiyAmi camp in Ireget cell in Kalaki Town Council in Kalaki district, Etengu says it was going to be a challenging task for him to represent the country but he is determined to do what it takes.

Etengu is one of the players who won a bronze medal in Kitgum during the October National Club Championship. He also won another bronze in Kampala in August.

Besides taekwondo, he is also a kickboxer. Etengu is the defending champion of Eastern Uganda in kickboxing.

“I am not taking the task ahead of me for granted. I just need people to come and support me so that I can help to raise the Ugandan flag high when I go to Nairobi in Kenya”, Etengu said.

Etengu with his other three players is supposed to perform in Kenya on December 6, 2023.

“I do not have resources, I need to be helped so that I can manage to travel,” he added.

What does his coach say?

Etengu’s coach, Zakaria Epuru Biji said their challenge was how to raise funds for facilitating a vigorous training now required.

He said the way his player now needs to be cared for requires more additional support than it was before.

He said Etengu was a good player and he believes he will perform well,

Meanwhile, the district sports officer of Kalaki, Charles Cherop said they were doing everything to see that Etengu represents the country.

He said Etengu was not now representing Kalaki or eastern Uganda but Uganda.

“Let us all give him the support he requires. He now needs a better trainer for better skills than what he has been having”, Cherop said.

According to Cherop, Etengu also now requires better medical checkups and better feeding.

Since he does not have a travelling passport, Cherop said it was time to help him process one.

looking at the training camp, he said they still need more equipment for Etengu to be perfected.
