As the grand celebration of the 100th anniversary of Kampala city-based Rubaga Cathedral gets closer, the Catholic faithful and other people of goodwill have continued to donate money towards the preparation of the function.

On August 20, 2025, Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, together with members of Rubaga Cathedral centennial organising committee, hosted the Christians of Entebbe Vicariate to the weekly fundraising function dubbed Lamaga, Yooyota Lubaga Cathedral, intended to raise money for the preparation of the celebration.

During the function at the cathedral square, the Christians (and other special guests) donated shillings 91 million.

The Christians donated money under the umbrella of their respective parishes, including Entebbe, Mpala, Kisubi, Namasuba, Ndejje, Nakawuka, Nabbingo, Buyege, Buloba, Kibiri, Kabulamuliro, Lweza, Bunnamwaya, Kasenge, and Kyengera parishes.

Archbishop Ssemogerere thanked the Christians of Entebbe Vicariate for their sacrificial love and commitment to the cathedral’s redevelopment.

“Seeing you here makes me very happy. It is a demonstration of your generosity and goodwill. Today is a working day and many of you have work and other important things do but you have decided to be here. This shows the love you have for your faith,” he said.

Ssemogerere referred to Rubaga Cathedral as the face of Kampala Archdiocese and the Catholic Church in Uganda, the reason it is right and just to renovate it ahead of its centenary.

Earlier at the start of the function, the Very Rev. Fr. Richard Nnyombi of the Missionary Society of the White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa) briefed the congregation about the history of the cathedral.

The Chairman of the cathedral’s centennial organising committee, Engineer Pius Mugalaasi, and the head of the fundraising sub-committee, Fred Kiyimba Freeman, also gave the donors an update on the ongoing preparations of the cathedral’s 100th anniversary celebration, which will take place on October 26.

At least shillings 2.4 billion is required to pull off the preparatory activities, which include the renovation of the cathedral and the redevelopment of its affiliate 100-car-parking yard.

Premier Babbanja’s donation

During the same function, the cathedral administrator, the Very Rev. Fr. Achilles Mayanja, declared shillings 60 million, which Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja donated towards the same cause during the Sunday mass at the cathedral.
