"I have consistently advocated for government investment in the industry, and I cannot contradict myself by deeming this development as negative. I have persistently fought for government recognition of the music industry, emphasising its value and the need for financial support, which has now materialised," he stated.

Musician-turned-politician Hillary Kiyaga, widely known as Dr. Hilderman, has disclosed his involvement in lobbying for the alleged sh13b designated for artistes.

In a recent interview, the Member of Parliament for Mawokota North hinted at his consistent advocacy for direct funding to artistes, citing the culmination of his efforts in securing the funds.

"I have consistently advocated for government investment in the industry, and I cannot contradict myself by deeming this development as negative. I have persistently fought for government recognition of the music industry, emphasising its value and the need for financial support, which has now materialised," he stated.

It's noteworthy that the legislator, a member of the National Unity Platform led by presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, is among the few opposition legislators endorsing the allocation of funds. Despite this, Bobi Wine criticised the government's decision to inject money into the artiste SACCOS, labelling artistes as beggars.

This criticism drew dissent from members of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, led by musician Eddy Kenzo.

Addressing the divergence with his party leader, Hilderman admitted to not briefing Bobi Wine about his lobbying efforts, resulting in the leader being unaware of his role in securing the funds.

"I never updated Bobi Wine on our lobbying efforts and our push for government investment in the industry," Hilderman acknowledged.

While expressing optimism about musicians gaining access to the funds, Hilderman acknowledged potential challenges in determining the recipients, utilisation, and overall impact.

He pointed out that disunity and internal conflicts within the music industry have historically hindered government funding. Hilderman remains hopeful that industry unity will pave the way for growth.

However, critics have raised concerns about Hilderman's unilateral actions, suggesting that his failure to inform his boss could tarnish the party's image and be perceived as collaboration with the government in power.

Kiyaga has played a pivotal role in advocating for the copyright amendment bill, assuring fellow creatives that the bill will be addressed promptly.
