Director of Public Prosecution Jane Frances Abodo has urged officers in the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) on the need for greater co-ordination between her office and theirs.

She made the call on Thursday while addressing regional and district/divisional CID officers at the headquarters in Kibuli, Kampala.

The Office of the DPP (ODPP) is mandated to guide Police investigations and prosecute criminal cases in all courts of competent jurisdiction apart from the Court Martial.

By virtue of its mandate, therefore, the ODPP is responsible for guiding investigations and prosecuting corruption-related cases that are received from all the Police stations in the country, including CID headquarters, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the State House Health Monitoring Unit.

Abodo’s address, which by press time had just started, focused on enhancing co-ordination between the ODPP and CID, with updates on new laws including the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023.

The two-day training started on Wednesday aiming also at preparing CID officers for the National Information Registration Authority’s (NIRA) mass enrolment of 17.2 million citizens and renewal of 15.8 million national identity cards on June 1, 2024.

The current IDs, which were issued in 2014, will expire in August this year.

The director of CID, Assistant Inspector General of Police Tom Magambo, said they were ready to assist NIRA in the upcoming mass enrolment and registration process, which he said plays a pivotal role in their collective fight against crime.
