Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Lino Anguzu has been elected president of the Eastern Africa Association of Prosecutors (EAAP).

Anguzu takes over from Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga, who now serves as the secretary general of the association.

Anguzu was elected during the association’s 11th annual general meeting and conference in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, from May 4 to 5, 2026, under the theme: Leveraging Technology in Combating Wildlife and Transnational Organised Crime.

EAAP brings together heads of national prosecution authorities from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Sudan and Seychelles.

A statement released on May 6, 2026, by the Office of the DPP says new executive committee members were also elected during the meeting.

The members include Angelique Habyarimana (the prosecutor general of Rwanda) and Firmin Mvonde Mambu (the DRC prosecutor general), who has been elected vice-president. Others are Tanzanian DPP Sylvester Mwakitalu (treasurer), Mozambique’s Attorney General America Letela (general counsel) and Zambian DPP Gilbert Phiri (committee member).

During the meeting, Zanzibar was admitted as a member of the association.

Anguzu commended the outgoing committee for advancing the association’s work and pledged to build on its achievements. He called for increased commitment, support and participation by member states in the association’s activities.

“I thanked the outgoing Committee for making significant strides in steering the association forward,” Anguzu said.

About EAAP

EAAP is an organisation of national prosecution authorities (corporate membership) that was established in 2010, with the founding members being national prosecution authorities of the East Africa Community (EAC).

The association is an independent, non-profit-making and non-political body. Its mandate is to promote and facilitate cooperation among its member states through the detection, investigation and prosecution of crimes in the region, as well as to offer legal assistance to its members.

The association name was changed from the ‘East Africa Association of Prosecutors’ to the ‘Eastern Africa Association of Prosecutors’ to reflect the expanded scope of the association.
