Sheikh Hatim Numan Wamala, the imam of Jamia Mosque in Bugembe in Jinja city northern division has warned relatives against mistreating orphans and widows.

During Eid el-Fitr prayers at Bugembe Muslim Primary School on Friday, Wamala said some relatives resort to grabbing the land of orphans and widows and selling properties left behind.

“Avoid land grabbing and chasing away widows after the death of their husbands, especially if they never gave birth, saying that they are not entitled to any share yet they struggled,” he said.

Wamala said some of the street children they speak to were victims of mistreatment in their families.

He was also critical of men who abandon their role of educating their children, providing health care and food.

“We hear some women lamenting on radios how their husbands abandoned them for others with no support. This is not acceptable. Let us accept our responsibilities."

The imam urged the security agencies to ramp efforts in stemming crime in especially Busoga sub-region amid worryingly persistent cases of murders and armed robberies.

He said that in the rural side of Jinja, armed thugs rob motorcycles, sometimes even killing the owners, and also raid people's shops and homes.

He also spoke against domestic tensions, making reference to a tragic incident last week where a 20-year-old man allegedly killed his mother over land wrangles in Iganga district.

Jinja northern division MP-elect Hussein Muyonjo, aka Swengere, called for patience, love and continued support for the needy.

He urged fellow Muslims to maintain the level of disciplined exhibited during the holy month of Ramadhan.

“We have been good during fasting, we should not be like one who washes and hangs in dust, let us remain the same,” he urged.

Jinja resident city commissioner Richard Gulume said police records indicated that fewer Muslims were involved in criminal activity during Ramadhan.

He urged them to continue behaving the same for the communities to remain peaceful and secure.
